30 arrested for 'smuggling' buffaloes

Around 30 people have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi district for allegedly smuggling more than 600 buffaloes, police said on Thursday.

Acting on a tip-off, nine vehicles, coming from Bihar to UP's Unnao district, were seized on the National Highway-2 near Mirzamurad area on Wednesday, said Senior Superintendent of Police Anand Kulkarni.

As many as 541 buffaloes and around 100 dead buffaloes have been recovered. Thirty men, including drivers, cleaners as well as cattle smugglers, have been arrested, the SSP said, adding that a case had been registered.
