Thirty-four pet cats housed in a wooden shed in an upstate New York area died in a fire, prompting authorities to launch a probe.

The 34 cats were discovered by firefighters responding to a blaze yesterday morning, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on Facebook.

The Sheriff's Office received a 911 phone call reporting that a shed was on fire in the yard of the residence located at 2253 Braley Road.

The resident of that address called 911 after being unable to enter the shed following the discovery of the fire.

Firefighters responded to the scene and were successful in extinguishing the blaze. The wooden shed was heavily damaged.

"Thirty four pet cats, which had been housed in the structure, perished in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Niagara County Fire Investigation Unit," the statement said.
