Four militants have been killed and four others arrested during a raid by Egyptian army in the restive North Sinai region.

The militants were killed in an exchange of fire with the army yesterday, an official said.

The security forces have arrested four militants while five others managed to escaped, the official added.

Ten houses, eight motorcycles and six other vehicles that terrorists used in their attacks against police and army personnel were destroyed during the raid.

North Sinai has been the scene of many violent attacks by Islamists since the January 2011 revolution that toppled the Hosni Mubarak regime.

Islamist militant attacks targeting the police and the military increased after the ouster of president Mohammed Morsi last year.

Many policemen and soldiers have been killed in the attacks which included bombings and shootings.

In July, militants attacked a military checkpoint in Al-Wadi Al-Gedid governorate in southern Egypt, killing 21 border guards.

The Egyptian military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
