50-yr-old woman undertrial hangs self in jail

A 50-year-old woman, undertrial for murdering her daughter-in-law, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in the district jail, officials said today.

"Rajkumari Sharma, lodged in the district jail for about two months for allegedly murdering her daughter-in-law for dowry, yesterday hanged herself in the gallery of the jail with her dupatta," Jail Superintendent PD Salonia said.

"A judicial inquiry was ordered in the case today. The judicial magistrate will submit the probe report to the district judge and the administration," Avinash Singh, ADM (City) said.

Rajkumari Sharma was arrested on May 3 after her daughter-in-law Priyanka Tripathi was found hanging at their house in Jawahar Nagar area of the city on May 1.
 

The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint filed by Priyanka's father.

Five other members of Rajkumari's family, including Priyanka's husband Aniket, Aniket's elder brother Vikram and his wife Vandana, were also made accused in the case and arrested.

Rajkumari's husband Ramakant and other accused in the case are absconding.
