Eight persons have been booked for allegedly trying to kidnap a 20-year-old girl at Nihalsinghwala here, police said today.

The accused, two of whom are identified as - Randhir Singh and Happy - arrived at girl's residence last night and tried to kidnap her. But her family members and neighbours thwarted the attempt, they said.

The accused also allegedly fired some shots in air to scare away the girl's family members, police said.

Prima facie it appears that the father of the girl, Baldev Singh, recently engaged his daughter with accused Randhir Singh but later refused, they said, adding the accused wanted to marry the girl despite the refusal.

Eight people have been booked under various sections of the IPC in this connection, but no arrests have been made so far, police said adding investigation is underway.
