Nine new breeds of livestock and poultry have been registered with Karnal-based National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), taking the total number of indigenous breeds to 160.

Newly registered breeds include one breed of cattle, two breeds each of goat and sheep, three breeds of pig, and one breed of chicken, an official statement said.

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Director General Trilochan Mohapatra gave away certificates to the applicants who registered nine new breeds.

"Registration of various unique populations as breeds shall help in inventorization, improvement, conservation and sustainable utilization of animal genetic resources of the country," Mohapatra said.

ICAR initiated the mechanism for 'Registration of Animal Germplasm' through NBAGR. In 2008, ICAR constituted a Breed Registration Committee.
