A Congress worker was injured after a sarpanch, owing allegiance to ruling Akali Dal, of village Lukmania in Gurdaspur district of Punjab allegedly fired at him for supporting the opposition party in the April 30 Lok Sabha polls.

Angeraj Singh, a former sarpanch, was supporting Congress candidate Partap Singh Bajwa during the April 30 Lok Sabha elections which created a politically rivalry with Sarpanch Harbajan Singh, who owes allegiance to ruling Akali Dal, police said today.

Harbajan Singh along with his family members assaulted Angeraj Singh and his two relatives, including his nephew Paramjeet Singh, yesterday, they said, adding during the clash Harbajan Singh allegedly fired gun shots at Paramjeet Singh in which he was injured.

Meanwhile, local Congress leaders accused police of favouring Akalis and not taking appropriate action.

A case of attempt to murder has been lodged against Harbajan Singh and probe is on in the mater, police said.
