The All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) leader Ardent Basaiawmoit was elected unopposed as the chief executive member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) while Pyniaid Sing Syiem became the youngest deputy chairman of the council.

The regional parties voted two-time council woman member Teilinia Thangkhiew as the chairperson of the KHADC last Tuesday, the first woman to have occupied the post in the council's 62 years of existence.

Former council chief and Congress leader P N Syiem withdrew his candidature after the party was reduced to a minority ten in the House of 29. ARPA has won 17 seats.

Meanwhile, Congress Parliamentary Party leader Thombor Shiwat would contest for the Chief Executive Member's post of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

The Congress has emerged as the single largest party with 14 seats followed by UDP winning six and nine by the Independent members.
