Badal announces remission for prisoners on I-Day

As a goodwill gesture to inmates lodged in different jails of the state, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today announced to grant remission of sentence ranging from one year to two months on the occasion of Independence Day.

Remission would only be granted to prisoners convicted by courts in the state and for one year those those sentenced to 10 to 20 years of imprisonment, a government spokesman said.

Likewise, remission of 9 months to those imprisoned for 7 to 10 years, 6 months to those serving a term of 5 to 7 years, 3 months to prisoners who have been sentenced for a term of 3 to 5 years and 2 months to the those with less than 3 years, he said.
 

For prisoners imprisoned for a period of 10 years and above, the inmate's good conduct would be taken into consideration, the spokesman said.

Remission would not be granted to prisoners convicted in heinous crimes, he added.
