Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today urged staff of anganwadi centres to create awareness among the people about the Domestic Violence Act so as to protect women from physical assault.

Anganwadi centres were fountains of promotion of health and well-being of women and children, she said after launching the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandhana Yojana (PMMVY), aimed at protecting pregnant women and lactating mothers.

The launch was held coinciding with International Women's Day celebrations here.

The Lt Governor also said and their staff should develop contact with local people to create awareness on government welfare schemes.

Distributing caps and torches to sanitary workers attached to the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan on the occasion, Bedi said tourists were all praise for Puducherry's cleanliness.

She further said the Union Territory's development depended on safety and security for women.

Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and Welfare Minister M Kandasamy were among those present.
