Bengal Assembly adjourned on account of Jayalalithaa's death

The West Bengal Assembly today condoled the demise of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, before adjourning the proceedings for the day as a mark of respect for the charismatic leader.

"The Assembly proceedings have been adjourned for the day as a mark of respect for J Jayalalithaa," Speaker Biman Banerjee said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced state mourning.

"As a mark of respect to late Jayalalitha Ji, our Assembly has been adjourned for today with a deep sense of grief and sorrow. State mourning is also being observed. We are all extremely saddened," Banerjee said in a statement.
 

A multi-faceted personality, Jayalalithaa, who passed away late last night, was the first woman Opposition leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and served as Chief Minister of the state for six terms.
