Bengal Guv unfurls Tricolour, inspects R-day parade

West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi hoisted the national Tricolour and inspected an impressive parade in the city, as the 70th Republic Day was celebrated in the state amid tight security.

Tripathi presided over the march past of different contingents of the Army, Navy, Air Force, paramilitary forces, state police and cadet corps at an hour long programme on Red Road.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her cabinet colleagues also attended the programme.

After a flying Air Force helicopter showered rose petals on the thousands of assembled people, the Bofors 155 MM field howitzer, the Pinaka multi barrel rocket launcher, the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile launcher, the L-70 anti-aircraft gun rolled on the road followed by colourful tableaux of the armed forces and march past of different contingents.

 

The march past by West Bengal Lady Rapid Action Force contingent also drew attention at the parade.

Students of different city schools and folk artists from communities like Rajbongshi, Rava in north Bengal and Chhau dancers from Purulia also presented cultural programme at the parade on Red Road.

The Kolkata police undertook tight security measures in the area and elsewhere in city keeping a tab on the proceedings from watchtowers as well as CCTV footage.

In a tweet, the Chief Minister wished the people on the occasion of Republic Day.

"On #RepublicDay, let us pledge to protect our #Constitution and uphold the principles of sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, republic, justice, liberty, equality and fraternity, as enshrined in the Preamble.
