Uttarakhand BJP today requested Chief Minister Harish Rawat to revive a 2011 government order paving the way for the upgradation of Ranikhet, Didihat, Kotdwar and Yamunotri into districts.

In a letter to Rawat, Pradesh BJP president Ajay Bhatt said the order was issued when the BJP was in power in 2011 and the matter was "put into cold storage" after Congress took over the reins of power.

Asking him to revive the order that will create four new districts - Ranikhet, Didihat, Kotdwar and Yamunotri - Bhatt said it was "necessary for the sake of administrative convenience".

"BJP had always believed in small administrative units and it was due to this belief that we had supported statehood to Uttarakhand and later favoured creation of four new districts," said Bhatt in his letter.

Ranikhet and Didihat are located in Kumaon region whereas Kotdwar and Yamunotri are in Garhwal.
