A burglary attempt was made in novelist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's house, a heritage site, at Samtaber in Howrah district, the police said today.

The private care taker of the house, where the author of 'Devdas' and 'Srikanta' lived for several years, found the lock of the main gate broken this morning.

However, no other sign of breaking in was found in any part of the house and only a pot with a flowering plant was missing, according to the FIR lodged by Dulal Manna, the care taker employed by the author's family members.

There was no night guard in the house, which is locally known as 'Sarat Chandra Kuthi' and is a popular tourist destination.

The house is where Sarat Chandra wrote 'Pather Dabi' (1926), 'Sesh Prashna' (1931) and other novels and short stories. It was declared a heritage site in 2009.

Born in 1876, the acclaimed novelist died in Kolkata in 1938.
