Cashier Sham Lal and bank clerk Rajinder Singh allegedly lied to the police that three unidentified men stole Rs 35.8 lakh at gunpoint from the Central Co-operative bank yesterday, SSP Surinder Kumar Kalia said.

Lal and Singh embezzled Rs 22 lakh from the bank, and cooked up the story of a robbery to cover up their crime, the SSP said.

Both the accused were arrested and Rs 22 lakh cash was recovered from them, Kalia said.

Lal was under the scanner as during investigation, police had found that he had opened the branch about one and a half hour earlier without informing senior officials or branch manager, he said.
