CBI officer convicted in graft case

A CBI inspector was today sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment after a special court convicted him in a graft case.

"The special judge, CBI cases, Patna has today convicted Prabeen Kumar, then Inspector, CBI, ACB, Patna and sentenced him to undergo five years rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs 20,000 under relevant Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 in a bribery case," CBI said in a statement.

The agency said it had registered a case against Kumar on the allegations of demanding a bribe from a bank manager for showing favour in disposal of a complaint against him.
 

"CBI laid a trap on January 29, 2008 and caught the inspector while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant. After investigation, a charge sheet was filed against the accused," the statement said.

It said the trial court found Kumar guilty and convicted him.
