Central Excise officer, wife convicted in DA case

A senior officer of the Central Excise Department and his wife were today sentenced by a CBI court to two and one year rigorous imprisonment respectively in a disproportionate assets case.

XII Additional Special Judge for CBI Cases S Kannammal also imposed a total fine of Rs 1,50,000 on G Murali Krishna, Superintendent of Central Excise, and his wife K Usha.

Based on an allegation that while working on deputation as Superintendent, Special Economic Zone at Sholinganallur, Krishna acquired assets disproportionate to known sources of his income, CBI had registered a case, an official release said.

Investigation showed he acquired assets worth Rs 56.78 lakh in their names against known sources of income of Rs 20.38 lakh and incurred an expenditure of Rs.20.50 lakh, it said, adding that disproportionate assets held by them was to the tune of Rs.56.90 lakh.
 

On completion of the probe, CBI had filed a charge sheet under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The court has also ordered confiscation of the disproportionate assets held in their names, it added.
