Two AIADMK leaders handed over a cheque of Rs five lakh to Kolkata-based gymnast Sowmita Dey, whose lower body is paralysed, towards her medical expenses, the party said today.

Last week, AIADMK supremo and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced the cash assistance to the 27-year-old gymnast who is now fighting for her life in a hospital in Kolkata.

AIADMK party's Lok Sabha floor leader and medical wing secretary Dr P Venugopal and Lok Sabha member B Senguttuvan personally handed over the cheque and a letter from Jayalalithaa for her speedy recovery, a party statement said.

In her letter, Jayalalithaa said, she read a news report about her health condition and it was very unfortunate that, despite excelling in gymnastics and representing West Bengal at the national level for almost a decade, "you are unable to pursue her dreams due to your ill health."

"I am enclosing a demand draft of Rs five lakh from Dr MGR Trust for your medical expenses. I hope this will be of help in improving your health", she said, hoping for her speedy recovery.

Down with Neurosarcoidosis since 2012, Dey now cannot even move her legs, with the lower half of her body affected by paralysis. After representing Bengal at the national level for almost a decade (from 1998 to 2008), she took to coaching in 2005.
