A Chinese man was apprehended at the Delhi airport Monday for allegedly carrying gold bars worth Rs 12 lakh in his baggage in violation of rules, officials said.

They identified the man as Jian Zhang and said he was intercepted by the CISF personnel at about 3 am at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) when he arrived at the facility to take a flight to Paro in Bhutan.

Four gold bars, each weighing 100gm, were recovered from his hand bag and he was handed over to Customs department officials as he could not produce required valid documents for carrying the yellow metal, they said.

The estimated value of the gold bars is about Rs 12 lakh, they added.
