Concert to remember thumri queen Girija Devi

To express reverence and gratitude to Girija Devi, who passed away last month, a memorial concert, in honour of the thumri queen, will be held here.

Organised by SPIC MACAY, in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), the concert on November 26 at Nehru Park here, will pay tribute to her musical journey spanning over six decades.

The evening remembering the doyen's immense contributions to music, will open with a 'shabdanjali' by Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Indian classical flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia will take the evening forward with a musical performance in her memory.

Vocalist Sunanda Sharma and folk singer Malini Awasthi will also join Pandit Chaurasia.
 

Girija Devi passed away on October 24 at the age of 88, and is survived by a daughter.

Born in a zamindar family, the doyen of Indian classical music, fondly called Appa ji, hailed from the Benares gharana.

She received the Padma Shri in 1972, the Padma Bhushan in 1989 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
