The Omar Abdullah government today came under fire over the poor power and water supply situation in Jammu region with senior Congress leader and MLA GM Saroori saying that no steps had been taken to mitigate the plight of the people in the scorching summer.

"In the scorching heat, when the temperature is hovering between 44 and 45 degrees Celsius, people are struggling to get power and drinking water.

"There is power and water supply failure in (Jammu) region," Saroori, formerly the roads and buildings minister in the National Conference-led coaliton government, told a gathering at Thakrie area of Kishtwar district.

The problem of huge transmission losses should be dealt with immediately and the state government should also impress upon the central government the need for a better power sharing agreement with the state, Saroori added.

Talking about the water crisis, Saroori said that the state government should put in place a comprehensive plan to deal with the problem.

He said that Jammu faces a daily water shortage of over 11 million gallons, which further goes up as the mercury rises in summer.
