Contraband substance seized, 3 held

Two truck drivers and a conductor were arrested today and huge quantity of contraband substance, including poppy straw and prescription drugs, were seized from their vehicles at two separate places along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, police said.

A truck was intercepted on a specific information at Sangam bridge near Bijbehara, 40 kms from here, in Anantnag district and the search of the vehicle led to the seizure of 39 boxes consisting of 4,680 bottles of codeine phosphate, being illegally smuggled into the Valley, a police spokesman said.

He said the driver and conductor of the vehicle, identified as Majid Abaas Wani and Tawfeeq Ahmad Parray from Sumbal area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district, were arrested and a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against them.
 

In another operation, the police intercepted a Jammu-bound truck at Jawahar Tunnel, 89 kms from here, in Kulgam district, and seized 1 kg of poppy straw during the search of the vehicle, the spokesman said.

Driver of the vehicle Bajan Singh of Pathankote has been arrested and a case was registered against him, he added.
