In a dramatic turn of events, city police today claimed that a prisoner, who was undergoing life sentence at Amritsar Central Jail, was allegedly abducted and killed by a police team during interrogation.
Earlier, Bikramjit Singh was missing for the last ten days and police had claimed that he had managed to escape from police custody at a hospital.
However, Police Commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh today held a press conference and said two police ASIs-- Gulshanbir Singh and Suridner Singh-- have been arrested and rest of the accused including Inspector Narang Singh will be nabbed soon.
Narrating the sequence of events, the officer said Bikramjit was recently shifted to Guru Nanak Dev hospital outside jail for backbone problem.
However, a team of Batala Police came to the hospital and picked up Bikramjit to interrogated him for his alleged involvement in a drug smuggling case, he said.
"The anti-drug wing of Batala whisked away Bikramjit without following any procedure, interrogated him inhumanly. He died in custody," the Commissioner said.
The team was led by Inspector Narang Singh, he said, adding that the body of Bikramjit was thrown in the Bhakra river near Ropar.
Police station Kiratpur found the body floating in the river and cremated it when nobody came forward to claim.
Later, with the arrest of guilty police officials who were guarding Bikramjit Singh the mater came to light, he said.
Meanwhile, the brother of Bikramjit alleged that his brother was abducted by police and by their rival party who wanted to avenge the killing of six of their relatives.
The six murders were a result of an old enmity in 2002, in which Bikramjit and four of his relatives were sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.
