An amount of Rs 5 lakh in cash has been recovered from the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district during a routine patrol, Border Security Forces (BSF) said today.

BSF personnel from the Baghmara Outpost last night found the Indian currency notes, including fake ones, amounting to Rs 5 lakh stashed inside a bag on the zero line, according to a release.

The person who was likely carrying the bag escaped to Bangladesh taking advantage of the darkness, it added.

The seized currency was later checked by bank officials in Baghmara who found that about Rs 4,500 of it was in fake notes. The cash has been handed over to police who will further probe the matter, the release added.
