Press Trust of India Guwahati
Responding to a PIL on the incident of police firing at Rangajan in Assam on August 19 and 20, the Gauhati High Court today directed the state and central governments to file their affidavits by September 3 next.

The petition alleged the indiscriminate police firing, lathi charge and torture on the protestors was a barbaric conduct on the part of the police/security personnel.

A division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice K Sreedhar Rao and Justice A K Goswami, heard the petition filed by Asom Gana Parishad leaders Jagadish Bhuyan and Dr Zoii Nath Sarmah.

According to the petition, the firing was totally uncalled for and the police/security personnel could have used tear gas, water canons, rubber bullets or any modern methods of controlling the mob.
