Strategies to meet future challenges in the country was the main focus of the CPI(ML-Liberation) Congress, which began here today.

In his inaugural address, party general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said Jharkhand had been a victim of "crooked politics" and "plunger by the corporate sectors".

"Political instability has marred Jharkhand's progress ever since its formation on November 15, 2000," he said.

Accusing both the BJP and Congress of indulging in various alliances with regional parties to "further their interests", Bhattacharya charged them with signing over 100 MoUs to help the corporate sectors at the cost of the interests of common people.

Over 1,400 delegates and observers from 22 states and three union territories participated in the open session of the ninth Congress of CPI(ML-Liberation).

The five-day programme will conclude on April 6 with a rally here.

Socialist movement representatives from Australia, Bangladesh and Nepal also participated in the meet, in which prominent left leaders of CPI, CPI(M), RSP, Forward Bloc and MCC also took part.

The leaders said the need of the hour is a strong left unity.
