A CRPF official today allegedly attempted suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon at his camp in Odisha's Deogarh district.

The trooper, Assistant Sub-Inspector B N Rao, is under medical care at a hospital in Sambalpur, the adjoining district, officials said.

He was found in a pool of blood at about 5 AM today inside the Central Reserve Police Force camp in Deogarh after he allegedly shot himself with an AK-47 assault rifle, they said.

A colleague of Rao first heard the gunshots after which the incident came to light, they said.

Senior officials of state police and the paramilitary force soon reached the spot where Rao, store in-charge of the 12th CRPF battalion, made the alleged attempt.

"A court of inquiry has been ordered and the reasons for the CRPF official taking the extreme step are being investigated," they said.
