Dams in Kovai, Nilgiris fast filling up

Several dams in the district and neighbouring Udhagamandalam are fast filling up following continous rains in the last few days, which have inundated farm lands and damaged hill crops.

With the rains bringing copious inflows, different dams in both the districts, 14 in Nilgiris alone, were set to reach their storage capacity, official sources said.

Agricultural land in the both districts were inundated in several areas, while hill crops like carrot, beans and cauliflower and braccoli, meant for export, cultivated in 500 acres were totally damaged in villages surrounding Udhgamandalam.

Power supply to many areas in the hill district remained affected as 245 electric posts had either been damaged or uprooted, they said adding men from Erode, Tirupur, Mettupalayam and Coimbatore had been sent for repairing them.
 

However, schools reopened in Nilgiris district while train services between Coonoor and Udhgamandalam, which were cancelled for the last two days, resumed today.

Agricultural land in and around the Kovai Courtallam and Siruvani are inundated, creating problem to the farmers, they said.

Bhavani and Noyyal river in Coimbatore district are in spate and flood alert had already been sounded in the low lying areas near Mettupalayam and people have been asked to move to safer places.
