Press Trust of India New Delhi
Delhi Women Commission has issued a show-cause notice to Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board over alleged safety lapses and filthy conditions at a shelter house near Bangla Sahib Gurudwara here.

"During a surprise visit by DCW chief Swati Maliwal it was found that single men had unrestricted access to female and family shelters. Drug and alcohol were consumed openly on the premises, the lighting and sanitary conditions were poor," a senior DCW official said.

He said a notice was issued to DUSIB raising serious concern over the lapses found in the safety arrangement and poor sanitation conditions.

"In response, DUSIB informed the commission that CCTV cameras will be installed on the premises and a boundary wall will be constructed separating the men and women shelters and the entry of men and boys into the female and family premises would be disallowed," he added.

According to DCW, an analysis of inspection reports of DUSIB staff of the night shelter revealed the checking criteria lacked gender-specific check points.

Number of female staff to inspect and monitor the shelter was found to be inadequate.
