Press Trust of India Puducherry
The State Transport Authority (STA) in Puducherry has launched a drive to ensure that the motor vehicles plying on the road here are insured under the third party insurance coverage.

Transport Commissioner S.D.Sundaresan said in a release here today that as per the direction of the Supreme Court on 'road safety' issued on December 27 last year and also as per provision of section Rs 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, third party insurance coverage for all vehicles is mandatory.

He said at present it has been found that 50 per cent of the motor vehicles plying on road are without insurance by the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority and General Insurance Council.

He said non-insurance of vehicles causes much hardships to road accident victims in getting compensation.

Hence the Transport Department has launched a drive to ascertain the number of vehicles plying without third party insurance coverage and details would be sent by completing the process within this month end to State Transport Authority.

Action would be taken against defaulters as the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister has already initiated steps to map the 'vahan' data with the insurance date to identify the vehicles without third party insurance, the release said.

Transport authorities would detain uninsured vehicles during the current checking of vehicles, the release said, adding, detained vehicles would be released only on production of insurance certificates.
