Festive fervour prevailed in the national capital today as people celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr by offering prayers at mosques, exchanging pleasantries, gifts and participating in fetes with their kith and kin.

Dressed in festive attire, hundreds of people turned up at historic Jama Masjid, Fathepuri Masjid, Hazrat Nizamuddin and other mosques in the city to offer special prayers on the festival which marks the culmination of the holy fasting month of Ramzan.

Soon after the 'namaz', people hugged each other and the mosques reverberated with greetings of "Eid Mubarak".

On the occasion, people were seen exchanging gifts and savouring special dishes, particularly 'sewayian' made of vermicelli, and different varieties of biryani and kebabs.

Elders gave 'eidee' (token money) to children. Many people visited their relatives and gave alms to the needy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the nation on this occasion.

Markets in various Muslim-dominated areas of the city have been decked up on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the most joyous days in the Islamic calendar.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police have strengthened security in and around the mosques to avert any untoward incident.

Ramzan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed as a fasting period by Muslims who abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset and it culminates in Eid celebrations.
