One of the pipelines inside the refinery carrying diesel to storage tank got ruptured leading to leakage of diesel which got sprayed on workers present in a nearby storage tank, refinery sources told PTI.
Four of them received fifty per cent burn injuries when the diesel suddenly got ignited while seven others were left injured.
When contacted, East Midnapore district SP Sukesh Jain said, "Eleven of them have been admitted to different hospitals where the condition of four workers is serious".
Refinery officials said they are trying to ascertain the exact reason on how the diesel got ignited.
They said there was a hot steamline passing through the area and if the diesel came into contact with it there was a possibility of it being ignited and added that there might be other reasons also.
The four seriously injured are being brought to Kolkata for better treatment.
