An anti-corruption activist of Indian-origin in Malaysia survived an attempt on his life when he was fired upon as authorities today initiated a probe into the incident.

R Sri Sanjeevan, 29, who heads a Crime Watch force, was driving his BMW with a friend and had stopped at a traffic light in Seremban city in Negari Sembilan state on Saturday when two men on a motorcycle approached them and the pillion rider fired at Sanjeevan, wounding him in the ribs.

His friend later drove him to hospital.

Sanjeevan, who is known for exposing corruption in the police force, has received death threats in the past.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that a high-powered team would investigate the case thoroughly.

A special joint task force under Federal CID director has begun investigations into the attempted murder.

"The ministry views the incident very seriously as Sanjeevan has been actively involved in raising issues pertaining to crime in the past," Hamidi said.

"The police's priority is to uncover who is behind the attempted murder and the motive," he said.

On allegations that some police personnel might be behind the shooting, the minister said action would be taken against anyone in the force if there was proof.

Sanjeevan's friend was later arrested for a drug-related case after his statement was recorded at the police station.
