In a victory to a woman who filed a cheating complaint accusing him of begetting a baby girl on the false promise of marrying her, former Deputy Mayor of Tiruchirappalli Asik Meera today agreed to marry her following which Madras High Court granted him anticipatory bail.

Meera, son of former Tamil Nadu Minister Mariam Pitchai, filed an affidiavit in the Madurai Bench of the court agreeing to marry the woman Durgeswari on whose complaint police had filed a cheating and rape case against the AIADMK leader.

Durgeswari, who was also present in the court, expressed her willingness to convert to Islam and marry Meera on the condition that he would marry her publicly and also register the marriage at the local Jamath.

Justice P.N.Prakash in his order said as the petitioner had given an undertaking to marry the woman as per law and maintain her and her child through him, he was granting bail.

Police had last year booked Meera after Durgeswari filed a complaint stating that he had cheated her after promising to marry her. She said they had physical relationship even after Meera, who resigned as Deputy Mayor after the issue surfaced, married another woman. She said she became pregnant due to him twice and had a baby through him.

Apprehending arrest, Meera had moved the court seeking anticipatory bail. During the last hearing on January 19, the Judge had rejected bail as Meera repudiated the marriage with the woman and directed both to be present in the court today.

When the matter came up, Meera, in a change of stand, filed the affidavit agreeing to marry her.

Taking note of it, the Judge said Meera should stay at the Gandhi Museum here and do social service for two weeks.

He also asked him to provide a bond for Rs.10,000 and two personal sureties for the same amount at the Judicial Magistrate court where he should surrender to obtain bail.

Meera submitted that he was willing to lead a life with Durgeswari and be the father of his child through her.
