Retired US Army Gen David Petraeus is apologizing again for sharing classified information with his biographer and mistress, Paula Broadwell, in his first time testifying publicly before Congress since resigning as CIA director.

Petraeus told the Senate Armed Services Committee today that he made a "serious mistake" four years ago that brought "discredit and pain" to those closest to him.

He says he violated the public's trust and breached his own values.

Petraeus retired in 2011 after commanding US and coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was CIA director from September 2011 to November 2012, when he resigned after acknowledging an affair with Broadwell.

He was sentenced to two years of probation and fined USD 100,000 for unauthorized removal and retention of classified information he shared with Broadwell and apologized.
