Fishermen of nearby Pamban, who went on an indefinite fast from December 31 demanding release of 18 colleagues arrested by Sri Lankan navy on December 30 called off their stir today, saying they have been hit hard financially as they had not put out to sea, officials said.

They urged the Indian and Sri Lankan governments to take steps to secure the release of the fishermen and warned that they would again go on an indefinite fast from January 9 if no positive result emerged, the officials said.

The 18 fishermen were arrested near Katchativu islet on December 30 by Sri Lankan Naval personnel for allegedly fishing in that country's territorial waters.
