Five candidates, out of 95, contesting the upcoming Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) elections have criminal background, according to election watchdog NGO Association for Democratic Reforms' (ADR).
"Of the total 95 candidates, five are with the criminal background," ADR state coordinator Bhaskar Assoldekar told reporters here today.
"Three candidates from panel fielded by expelled Congress legislator Atanasio Monserratte and one each from Congress and BJP-backed panel have criminal cases lodged against them," Assoldekar said quoting affidavits filed by the nominees.

The elections for 30 wards of the civic body will be held on March 6.
ADR, after analysing the affidavits filed by all the candidates, have profiled them under various criteria.
He said as many as 19 candidates have shown asset of over Rs 1 crore. On the academics front, nearly 70 per cent of them have education below class XII, seven have said they studied till class VII while one candidate is educated till class V.
There are 28 candidates who are graduates and only one is a post graduate.
Only two candidates are below age of 25, while 40 per cent are 50 years and above, Assoldekar said.
