Fog plays havoc with air traffic in Delhi, 173 flights delayed

Flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here were virtually paralysed for six hours this morning, delaying over 173 flights, as visibility dropped below 50 metres mark.

It was the first major disruption this winter season.

The low visibility procedure (LVP) was enforced at 3:12 AM and terminated at 2:50 PM, airport official said.

During this period two flights, one each of Air India and Jet Airways were also cancelled due to the bad weather at Kullu and Chandigarh, the official said.

Of the 173 flights affecting due to the dense fog engulfing the city, 97 were the departing flights while the rest were arriving at the airport from other destinations.
 

A thick blanket of fog enveloped the city this morning disrupting normal life. Visibility dropped to zero in the early hours.
