Acknowledging that the party is suffering from weak leadership and slack discipline at various levels, China's ruling Communist Party has asked its members to abide by new rules banning extravagant eating, drinking and playing golf.

The CPC Central Committee adopted updated rules on clean governance and sanctions for those who violate the Party code of conduct on October 12, as the old ones were deemed outdated since the launch of the anti-corruption drive.

The rules are necessary because the CPC is suffering from weak leadership and slack discipline among its members, said the General Office of the CPC Central Committee in a statement today.

The revised rules have been dubbed by many to be the most comprehensive and strictest since the opening up and reform drive began.

For the first time, they explicitly list extravagant eating and drinking and playing golf as violations.

Discipline inspection departments should intensify supervision within the CPC and harshly punish those who violate the code of conduct, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
