Former Mangalore Mayor Abdul Aziz has been sentenced to two months imprisonment by a court here for violating the code of conduct during the 2008 Assembly elections.
The Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Undi Manjula Shivappa in her order yesterday also said he should pay a fine of Rs 10,000 failing which he would have to undergo another one month in prison.
The then Assistant Election Officer, Pravinchandra Karkera had filed a complaint against Aziz on May 6, 2008 alleging that he was found canvassing votes for the Congress party at Padavu labour colony in the city when the model code of conduct was in force.
He was carrying election-related materials in his car and was found to have been campaigning without obtaining prior permission from the electoral officer.
He was convicted under the relevant provisions of Representation of Peoples Act. Assistant Public Prosecutor B Mohan Kumar examined five government employees, a police head constable and a videographer as witnesses in the case.
Aziz, now associated with JD(S), said he would file an appeal against the judgement before the Sessions Court.
