The Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has sought to distance himself from the ongoing controversy regarding the Medium of Instruction (MoI) in elementary education in the state.

"We don't want to politicise the language issue, nor do we want to fall in any argument now," Parsekar said yesterday.

The Chief Minister said he would not like to comment on the issue as it can create controversy.

"I would like to stay away from the issue," he said.

The BJP in its 2012 Goa Assembly election manifesto had assured to give MoI status to regional languages - Konkani and Marathi.

Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM), a social group, has demanded mother tongue as the MoI and sought that the grants given to schools teaching in English medium should be stopped.

The BBSM had recently warned to begin campaign against the state government if it doesn't withdraw the grant given to English medium schools.

Another social group has called for English to be made the MoI.
