Newly formed Goa Democratic Front (GDF) party made a pitch for a larger share from the Centre's coffers today, considering the amount of contribution by the state to the Union government through various taxes.
"Goa has been contributing almost Rs 10,000 crore to the Centre in the form of various taxes. The amount of money contributed by Goa to the Union government almost matches the state's budget," GDF president Dayanand Narvekar told reporters at a press conference here today.
Narvekar, who is contesting from the North Goa parliamentary seat on a GDF ticket said that elected members of parliament (MPs) should press for a larger share.
"If we get our due share, we need not tax people in the state at all. The Centre's share can make up for the financial requirement of the state," he said.
Narvekar, who was Goa's former finance minister said if he is elected to the parliament, he would certainly raise the issue in the House and lobby for it.
"Someone who cannot press for this demand has no right to contest elections. We don't want doles from the Centre. What we require is our proper share which is due to us," he said.
