The government today sought more time from the Delhi High Court to decide on whether to provide publications on homoeopathy free of cost in jail to a prime accused in 2006 Mumbai serial train blasts.

Justice Rajeev Shakdher was informed by the counsel for the Centre that they require four weeks time to reply on the issue as it has not yet received any information from the Superintendent, Arthur Road Jail, Mumbai.

To which, the court asked the counsel to file their response before May 15.

Earlier, the court had sought to know from the central government why it cannot provide free publications to accused Ehtesham Qutubuddin Siddiqui for study.

The court had also asked the government to inform it about the status of case of Siddiqui lodged in a Mumbai jail.

The court had sought response after Siddiqui had written a letter to the Delhi High Court, which was converted into a PIL, seeking a direction that he be provided 45 publications on homoeopathy free of cost in jail for studying as he was too poor to afford them.

Hearing the plea, the court had suggested to the government that the jail authorities can purchase the publications and put them in jail library from where the accused can take them and study.

Siddiqui is one of the prime accused in the Mumbai train blasts attacks of 2006, in which seven bombs set off in first-class coaches of suburban trains and at railway stations killing 187 people.

Siddiqui has been lodged in jail since 2006.
