The Congress today named Hardev Singh Ladi as its candidate for the Shahkot by-election in Punjab slated for May 28.
"Congress President Rahul Gandhi has approved the candidature of Hardev Singh Ladi as the Congress candidate for the ensuing by-election to the legislative assembly of Punjab from Shahkot constiuency," a statement from AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik said.
The bypoll for the Shahkot Assembly seat in Jalandhar district had been necessitated following the death of veteran Shiromani Akali Dal leader Ajit Singh Kohar in February this year.
An aide of former Punjab minister Rana Gurjit Singh, Laddi had unsuccessfully contested the 2017 Assembly election and had lost to SAD's Ajit Singh Kohar.
The last date for filing of nomination papers is May 10 while the last date for withdrawal is May 14, as per election officials.
