The Kerala High Court today directed the state Chief Secretary to file an affidavit by December 18 regarding the proposed Rs 2,000-crore Aranmula airport project.

The direction was issued while considering suo motu proceedings initiated on the basis of a report apprehending that the proposed project may affect the threshold and temple pole of Aranmula Sri Parthasarthy Temple.

The government submitted a letter of Pathnamthitta District Collector today.

A division bench comprising justice T R Ramachandran Nair and T Kemal Pasha said that for getting a clear picture in this matter Aero survey department had to be impleaded following which notice was issued to Aero survey of India.

The airport is proposed to be built on a 700-acre area in Aranmula of Pathnamthitta district. The project is facing a stiff obstruction from environmental activists and opposition parties saying that it would destroy many characteristics that qualify Aranmula as a heritage village.

There are also fears that the project would affect the temple there.
