The Delhi High Court today came down heavily on city police and their Odisha counterpart for the inability to trace a girl who is missing since 2010 after being brought here by a placement agency.
The bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana said police was not doing the duty "properly" and it may consider ordering a CBI inquiry.
"We do not need to have to tell as to how the police should conduct the inquiry. We will entrust matter to the CBI, if you repeat same thing. This is your (police) duty, you are not doing a charity," it remarked when the counsel for Kandhamal police said despite the efforts, they have neither been able catch the culprits nor succeeded in tracing the girl.
"If you want an adjournment then we will grant. But take instruction from your seniors and come prepared or we will pass an order. I am saying you to meet your DG and come back. Two weeks time is granted to take instruction from your senior," the bench said and fixed the matter for hearing on February 12.
Four girls, aged between 14 and 18, were trafficked to Delhi from Odisha by a placement agency.
Three, who were eventually rescued, were found to have been physically and sexually abused.
The parents of the fourth girl had filed a habeas corpus plea in the High Court, alleging that the Delhi and Odisha police have failed to trace the girl.
The court, however, had expressed disappointment and had said, "We are not satisfied with the way inquiry is taking place.
