I-T seizes over Rs 1 crore in red light area

Officials of the investigation wing of the Income Tax (I-T) department today carried out search and seizure operations in the red light area, Sonagachi, in the northern part of the city and recovered cash in excess of Rs one crore.

Sources in the I-T investigation wing told PTI that the officials conducted search operations in certain parts of the area early this morning.

The operations were carried out upon the owners of the houses in the area where sex workers stay and do their trade.

"This is for the first time that such an operation was conducted in a red light area," one I-T official said.
 

The officials sealed the bank accounts and lockers of those persons whose premises were searched, he added.
