The chances of survival of Indian mountaineer Chhanda Gayen and her two Sherpa guides, who have been missing since Tuesday after being swept away by an avalanche, are very slim, a senior Nepalese official said today.

"We conducted search operation till Saturday for the three climbers including an Indian national, who were swept away by an avalanche on way to Mount Yalung Khang (8,505 metre) near the Everest," said Tilak Pandey, the official at the Tourism Ministry said.

"There was no information of their whereabout," he said.

"The rescue works have been abandoned after five days as there is rare chance of rescuing alive any person after spending 24 hours in the snow," he pointed out.

Gayen,34, along with two mountain guides --Dawa Wangchuk Sherpa and Temba Sherpa -- was climbing Mount Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, when they went missing.
