In a joint operation, the Bihar Police and Jharkhand Police today arrested six persons and busted a gang in East Champaran district, which used to steal costly mobile phones from various parts of the country and disposed them off in Nepal.
The police also recovered 202 mobile phones worth Rs 28 lakh from them.
East Champaran Superintendent of Police (SP) Sunil Kumar said the gang was operating for a long time.
"The recovered mobile phones were burgled from two shops in Dhanbad and Chaibasa of Jharkhand on December 19 and 23 respectively. The Jharkhand Police was investigating the case. They traced the links of criminals to East Champaran and we conducted raids at Ghorasahan and other places in the district to nab them," Kumar said.
The arrested persons have been identified as the kingpin Ram Babu Rai and gang member Anil Kumar, Shyam Babu Sah, Jagga Sah, Prabhunath Pandey and Muhammad Tajuddin. They were being taken to Jharkhand on transit remand.
Kumar said the gang would visit various towns in different states and conduct recce of mobile shops there.
They would put up in posh hotels and once set, they would break open the shutters of the targeted shops and steal the costlier mobile handsets only.
"During interrogation we found the arrested persons used to strike deals in Nepal and dispose off the mobiles there. They were set to sell the recovered mobiles for Rs 7.75 lakh in the neighbouring country in the next couple of days," the SP added.
