The condition of senior IPS officer Ranjit Sahay, who allegedly attempted to end his life by setting himself ablaze at his South Mumbai residence, is critical and the police could not record his or his family's statements, the police said here today.

"We have not recorded the statement of the Additional Director General of Police, as his condition is critical. His family is also in a state of shock and not in a position to say anything," a police officer told PTI.

Investigators also could not examine the scene of the incident, since the house on the first floor of Avanti Apartments remained locked, since the entire family is at the Bombay Hospital.

Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil visited the hospital to enquire about Sahay's health today.

"I was told that Sahay's health is in a critical condition. A police inquiry into the incident is on," he said responding to a question.

The Minister replied in the negative when asked if any "suicide note" was found.

An accident case has been registered at the Malabar Hill police station, the police said.

A 1986-batch IPS officer posted at the Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation, Ranjit Kumar Sahay was rushed to the Bombay Hospital around 12.30 pm on Sunday by his family members and colleagues, after he set himself ablaze, half an hour earlier.

Sahay was recently in news for submitting a report to the Anti-Corruption Bureau against Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) Managing Director Deepak Kapoor, allegedly over some irregularities.

He had conducted the inquiry in his capacity as MSRTC's chief vigilance officer. He was promoted and transferred as Additional Director General of Police two months ago.
